Back in 1887 Charles Gouffon started a moving and storage business. He drove a mule-drawn wagon to Market Square and waited for businessmen and others to call on him to move freight or other items.

A lot has changed in 120 years, said Tom Gouffon, the fourth generation of his family to head the company. Today the company has a fleet of 20 trucks, moves customers all over the country and is looking to open satellite offices in Chattanooga and Nashville.

Tom Gouffon took over the company’s helm in 1990 after joining the company in 1983 as its operations manager.

“My great-grandfather Charles started this business with the most meager means possible,” he said.

In addition to the moving services, Gouffon Moving and Storage offers its customers 72,000 square feet of space for storage. They have available standard, bulk storage, as well as climate-controlled facilities. Storage capabilities make up a large part of the company’s business.

Gouffon Moving and Storage employs between 40-55 workers. The numbers increase from May through August, which is the busy season for all moving companies, Gouffon said.

“Most families try to wait until the kids are out of school before they make a move to a different location, so we add extra help during our peak season,” he said.

One person has been especially helpful to the company and its president. Chris Kirkland and Gouffon have been friends since their teens, and they have for years shared a love for youth baseball in the area. Gouffon brought Kirkland on board in 1991, and he is now the executive vice president.

“Chris and I have been friends for a long time. His skills and ideas have helped us to maintain our reputation as friendly and service-oriented company,” Gouffon said.

For most of its existence, Gouffon Moving and Storage was known as a local mover, but about two years ago it added long-distance moving service.

Typically, customers re-locate to cities within a 1,000-mile radius, but Gouffon will go as far as necessary.

“We have no problems going beyond that 1,000-mile distance, and we will gladly serve customers whose moves take them to just about anywhere in the country,” Gouffon said.

The commitment to long-distance moving has led the company to purchase its first tractor-trailer rig.

The company’s mission is fourfold, Gouffon said:

“Those are important aspects to which my dad (Joe) subscribed. He set the table for the way we work at Gouffon Moving and Storage. The best word for it is fair,”

Gouffon said.

“We have no problems going beyond that 1,000-mile distance, and we will gladly serve customers whose moves take them to just about anywhere in the country,” Gouffon said.

“If we take a job, we won’t ever cancel it if a bigger one comes along,” Gouffon said.

Satisfied customers spread the word, and that is crucial to growing the business, he said.

Gouffon Moving & Storage Co. is a charter member of the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce. It became a member of the BBB in 1958 and has consistently maintained a superior rating. Chamber spokesman and Director of Communications, Garrett Wagley had high praise for the company.

“Gouffon’s 120 years in business certainly speaks well for the services it offers,” Wagley said.

The company also has donated services for various community groups, including the Knoxville Nativity Pageant and the Knoxville Symphony.

And they have helped Sevier Heights Baptist Church during their Living Christmas Tree programs.

“During the final stages of the Living Christmas Tree preparation, Gouffon sent 25-30 of its employees to help us load all the things that are used in the program. After the performances are complete, they sent the same crew to help re-load all the equipment,” said Eddie Smith, Living Christmas Tree Coordinator.

All in all, Gouffon’s management team believes they offer a good value for the money and give the best service possible to clients. Gouffon also believes that his company stays competitive because of its employees. He feels sure that Gouffon Moving and Storage is much more demanding on its employees.
